Using Laxatives for Weight Loss can be Dangerous

Dangers of Using Laxatives For Weight Loss

One popular weight loss supplements available in the market today take the form of tea.

Stores all over sell slimming tea, dieter’s tea and others but all of them are actually the same. They may appear to be effective, but what is not seen may actually harm you.

One of the effects of drinking dieter’s tea is frequent bowel movement. This gives people the feeling of body cleansing. These people may get toxins out of their body but it isn’t exactly the only thing that slimming tea actually does to the body. Slimming tea contains herbs which are natural laxatives. These include aloe, senna, rhubarb root, cascara, buckthorn and castor oil. These are products which are derived from plants and are used since the ancient times because of their potency in treating constipation and to inducing bowel movement.

Cascara, castor oil and senna are substances which are recognized as laxatives available over the counter and are also regulated as drugs. Scientific studies show that diarrhea induced by laxatives does not absorb significant amounts of calories taken in the body.

The reason for this is that laxatives do not act on the small intesines where most of the calories are absorbed. Instead, they work on the large intestines. If taken in large amounts for prolonged periods, it can affect fat absorption of the body. This may lead to greasy diarrhea and loss of weight. Abuse of laxatives is common practice among people who suffer from bulimia and anorexia nervosa.

While weight loss can be guaranteed by overdosing on laxatives, it may also cause permanent damage to the gastrointesitinal tract and the weakening and softening of the bones, a condition known as osteomalacia. Drinkers of slimming teas may actually patronize the product because they are less axpensive and taste better than other laxatives sold in the market. Other people, such as those with eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia nervosa drink dieter’s tea because they work fast and produce watery stool and having loose consistency.

Women may even be more susceptible to the effects of slimming teas. Although they may are not known to interfer directly with the woman’s menstrual cycle and fertility, they should watch out if drinking them causes them to rapidly shed off weight. It is also not safe for pregnant women to be taking in laxatives of any kind. Wise and reponsible herbalists also discourage the use of senna and other herbal products with laxative properties for pregnant women and women who are trying to conceive.

One should be wary about these findings because the labeling of slimming teas in the market today can be absolutely misleading. For instance, they commonly refer to the laxative qualities as “natural bowel cleansing properties” and not specifically use the word “laxative”.Some even use the term “low-calorie” on their labelling. These products in fact, contain essentially no calories nor nutrients whatsoever; unless of course, if they are sweetened.

Adverse effects of misusing laxatives in the form of slimming tea generally occur when taken in more than or longer than recommended. These include nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, fainting, rectal bleeding, electrolyte disorder and dehydration as well as injury and worse, death. It was also reported that excess use of stimulant laxatives cause severe constipation and pain for long periods (as much as for decades) due to the colon losing its function. It eventually led to surgery removing the colon altogether.

What There is to Know About Diet Pills

“What There is to Know About Diet Pills?”

According to manufacturers, diet pills use natural ingredients capable of prolonging life and containing alcohol used in medication or flavoring. One thing’s for sure, never take diet pills as substitute for cutting calories without the doctor’s recommendation.

There are simple but important steps to be followed when taking diet pills:

1.Never crush diet pills to mix in drinks or soups. Take it whole with a full glass of water.

2.Diet pills causes a person to urinate more frequently due to its diuretic effect. This could lead to dehydration, thus, causing complications. As a pre-caution, it is best to drink eight glasses of water everyday while on diet pills.

3.Take only the recommended dosage. Taking more than required will not help you lose weight but increase the risk of side effects.

4.Heartbeat should be less than 86 beats per minute. Stop taking the pills if it reaches 90 or higher that is why regular checking of pulse is a must.

5.Always follow the instructions set by the dietician and/or doctor and not only rely on what’s enclosed in the box. Also diet pills will only work as expected if diet plan is being followed.

6.After three months, stop taking the diet pills. Common diet phenylpropanolamine is safe to use only up to sixteen weeks. Other studies show that it can cause health problems if taken under one month.

There are two kinds of diet pills; one is the prescription only diet pills and the over-the-counter diet pills. Prescription Diet Pills – are drugs regulated by the Food and Drug Administration agency which side effects are monitored, maybe advertised and prescribed under certain dosages. The most popular of these is Xenical, which is licensed for long-term use.

However, this too has it’s own side effects, diarrhea, oily and unexpected fecal discharge are just some. Therefore, users are advised to take a low fat diet plan. While Over-the-Counter Diet Pills are categorized as food substitute and are unregulated. Beware that these diet pills are not Federal authorities tested and may cause serious side effects up to and including death.

Aside from a dietician, local pharmacists can also help in determining the pills that are safe and not for each person’s case. Just be extra careful about the so-called “natural” or “organic” ingredients. Not everything that comes from a natural source is safe. One example is Ma Huang, which is a botanical source of ephedrine known as a stimulant and being studied for potential side effects. Those who have or have a family history of prostate problems, thyroid disease, mental illness, high blood pressure, and heart problems should avoid taking diet supplements. The same applies to those who’ve had seizures or strokes. If someone is taking cold medicines, especially those with decongestants, diet pills should not be taken.

Whether it be a prescription or an over-the-counter diet pill, the dangers are unvarying with other similar drugs which controls the brain to reduce appetite and includes chest pains, hair fall, fever, depression, and even impotence. And as a general rule, don’t ever try to take diet drugs if pregnancy is suspected. Persons that are allergic to sulfites and tartrazine should also avoid taking diet pills. And those who are under 18 years or over 60 years of age should consult their doctor first prior to taking any dietary drugs, especially if they rely on over-the-counter stimulants used as a replacement for increase exercise.

Richard Hackworth says that Losing Weight is GOOD

Why Losing Weight is Good

There is a great benefit acquired from losing weight.  Though losing weight is not easy,  the long term effects brought by it would probably be of help to anyone considering to shed those unwanted and unhealthy pounds.

The following are a few of the remarkable advantages from losing those excess weight.

Weight loss prevents high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke

That is a three in one benefit from losing weight.  It is a fact that heart disease and stroke are one of the primary reasons for disability and death in both men and women in the US.  People who are overweight have a higher risk to have high levels of cholesterol in their blood stream as well as triglycerides (also known as blood fat).

Angina, one type of heart disease, could cause chest pains as well as a decrease in the oxygen pumped to the heart.

Sudden death also occurs from heart disease and stroke, and usually this strikes with very little warning, signs and   symptoms.

It is a fact that by decreasing your weight by a mere five to ten percent, this could positively decrease the chances of you having or developing heart disease or a stroke.  Plus, how your heart functions would also improve as well as your blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride count will decrease.

Weight loss prevents type 2 diabetes

Diabetes puts in jeopardy one’s life as well as how one leads his or her life because of the complications that result from having it.  Both types of diabetes, type one and type two are linked with being overweight.  To those who already have diabetes, regular exercise and losing weight could help in controlling your blood sugar levels as well as the medication you may be currently taking.  Increase your physical activity.  You could simply walk, jog or dance.  It helps get those blood streams moving as well as lose those unnecessary pounds.

Weight loss helps reduce your risk for cancer

Being overweight is linked with a number of kinds of cancer.  Specially for women, the common types of cancer that is associated with being overweight include cancer of the uterus, gallbladder, ovary, breast, and colon.  This is not meant to scare you, this is only to keep you informed.  Men are at risk too from developing cancer if they are overweight.  These include  cancer of the colon, prostate and rectum.  Extra weight, a diet high in fat and cholesterol should as much as possible be avoided.

Weight loss reduces sleep apnea

Or it could eliminate it all together.  Sleep apnea is a condition wherein one could temporarily stop breathing for a brief period and then would continue to snore heavily.  Sleep apnea could cause drowsiness or sleepiness during the day and – because of being overweight – could result in heart failure.  Shedding those excess pounds could help in eliminating this problem.

Weight loss reduces the pain of osteoarthritis

When one weighs heavily, the joints of  his or her knees, hips and lower back would have to exert double – if not triple – effort to carry him or her through out his / her waking, walking and moving life.  This could cause tension and stress on these joints.  Weight loss decreases the load these joints carry thus decreasing – if not eliminating – the pain of one who has osteoarthritis.

7 Tips For Having A Great Workout

7 TIPS FOR HAVING A GREAT WORKOUT

We’ve all had lackluster workouts, but if you take care of these seven tips that will absolutely minimize the times that you don’t hit the gym raring to go and make huge progress.

1. Don’t be a slave. Schedules written down on paper look wonderful.  They appeal to the idea of symmetry and neatness that all of us have, but your body doesn’t care what day of the week it is or what the paper says. If you need to adjust things because you’re not recovered, don’t be afraid to do so.

2. Pick and time your food. Everybody has different reactions to food and a different timetable that their body operates on for digestion and use of energy. So pick the food that you like that makes you feel the best or strongest and eat it at the time that makes the most sense or usefulness for your workout. Again don’t be a slave. Just because Mr. Northeast Uzbekistan likes to eat oatmeal one hour and thirteen minutes before his workout doesn’t mean that it’s right for you. But be smart as well. Heavy garlic, tomato sauce, meatballs and sauerkraut four minutes and fourteen seconds before your workout probably ain’t the best idea.

3. Exercise often works on perpetual momentum meaning the better the shape you get in, the better your workouts get. The better you recover, the more consistent they are. That being said, build some momentum building time into your workouts. If you’ve been doing nothing but heavy power training and suddenly decide you can’t live without running a marathon, even though you haven’t run farther than from the couch to the refrigerator in the last year it’s probably not a great idea to go out and try to run 26 miles first thing tomorrow. Build up and give your body some time to get a running start at adaptation.

4. Stay hydrated. Most people don’t drink nearly enough caffeine free liquid, let alone water. The quickest way to fall out during your workout or to have a crappy one to start with is to not have liquid in your system. Your car won’t run long without oil and you’d never drive it without it. Why would you do the same thing to your body.

5. Get warmed up. Sometimes even when you don’t feel like a good workout if you spend some time getting the blood pumping, getting a sweat going and raising your core temperature, and getting your muscles and joints limbered up, you’ll suddenly feel like working out and your strength will suddenly be better. Not only is it protective of injury, it’s a mental boost and performance enhancer.

6. Mental pre/Qi Gong. Visualizing what you’re going to do and then immediately following through with it without ever allowing yourself to doubt your visualization is the key to effective mental preparation.  The deep breathing and energy recruiting movement exercises of Qi Gong can help you get to a deep level of focus within the mind and a place of unified, muscular, mental, spiritual and subtle energy in physical effort focus. These are high level techniques but they are simple to apply and can be a huge boost to your workout.

7. Have fun! Doing something that you really like within the context of something that brings you long-term gains and is safe is the key to being enthusiastic and productive in your workouts. Cover the bases of strength in all areas of the body and in levels of max, intermediate and endurance expression. Set your program up so that it fits within your life and with the equipment you have access to. Beyond that do what you like to do. The more you like it, the better you’ll be at it.  The more fantastic your workouts will be.

You want some of the greatest workouts every put down on paper? Do you want some of the most powerful, productive workouts you can imagine?  Do you want to be able to train with whatever is at hand and still get strength and endurance? Do you want to get real results?

Do you want to get real strength and real endurance together? Do you want to take your martial practice and competition and your total being to a whole new level? Then don’t’ forget our new dvd, “The Love Your Body Workout.”  It’s all there waiting for you.

7 Secrets to Enjoying Exercise

7 Secrets to Enjoying Exercise
provided by www.richardhackworth.com

Pain is something that everyone wants to avoid. Often our dislike for exercise comes from childhood gym class. We have all at one time or another had that gym teacher who thought it was their job to scream at you to make you a fit citizen. Not very motivating is you ask me.

But there are 7 ways to make exercise more enjoyable and they also come from early childhood gym class.

The first secret is to listen to music while training. We all liked gym class the weeks that it was about learning how to dance even if we hated the thought of having a child of the opposite sex as a dance partner. Yuck! But once the music started we seemed only to feel the rhythm and it made us feel good. One of the reasons music during training helps us feel good is because as we pay attention to the rhythm we also breath in a more relaxed fashion.

Taking long deep breaths that oxygenize our blood stream and increase our energy level while causing us to naturally improve our posture and form. So just like gym class, if we listen to music that we enjoy while exercising, we will enjoy it more.

The second secret to enjoying exercise is to think about positive, successful moments in your life when we were full of confidence and courage. Imagine that you are bringing these same qualities into the picture of what you want to accomplish. Remember when you got a Ribbon as an award for some field day games or school relay of some kind? The sense of accomplishment made you think positively and enjoy the event even though you were hot an sunburned from a long day in the hot sun. Use that positive feeling and positive thoughts to draw encouragement for your future workouts.

The 3rd secret to enjoying exercise is motivational stories. Remember back to that gym teacher who always told you stories about historical athletes and how they overcame injuries, disease or other hardships and still became a champion. Those stories inspired us to try harder and enjoy our training more. You can recapture those motivating stories without hunting down your old gym teacher from 4th grade by listening to motivational CDs, filled with stories and information about how you can improve your life. You can find motivational story CDs at any book store. I like to listen to them in the car on my way to my workout.

4. Spend some time focusing on your goal and your present condition before you begin your session. Doing this will help you begin and end your program with focused enthusiasm.

5. Focus on your breathing, watching the inhale and exhale. When you focus on your breathing while exercising, you can feel the same euphoria, within minutes, that has been labeled, “runner’s high.”

6. Focus on the bottoms of your feet when you are running, biking or walking. Push off the ground. Notice how much more of your latent physical strength is used when you pay attention to the connection your feet have with other things.

7. At a high-point of the workout, imagine that you have already achieved your goal and someone wants to know how you accomplished it. Mentally pretend that you are telling them how you did it and they are praising and congratulating you for your achievement.

Weight Loss Program

As you progress further into any weight loss program the foods that you choose will change as initially you’ll be eating predominantly for weight loss.

As your weight gets to a more optimal level you will need to change your diet accordingly as maintenance rather than weight loss will be the key to your nutritional needs.

At any time if you find that you are reverting back to previous habits you should take action immediately and consider the life style and your health problems that those habits delivered to you in the past.

The fitter and healthier that you get the easier it will be for you to stay away from those old habits.

For this reason where possible you should choose a weight loss program that will optimize your health as soon as possible even if you still have more weight to lose, simply because you will be far less likely to slip back into your old habits if you can see the progress coming fairly rapidly and you get to feel that your health is improving and your fitness levels are rising.

Even by taking the correct balance of vitamins and minerals will improve your well-being and help you to feel better about yourself. This will also make it easier for you to continue on a new dietary plan as the supplementation will reduce the chances of your body reacting to the changes in nutrition.

All things being equal, the person who uses supplements, provided they are the correct ones, will achieve more success a lot sooner with any weight loss program than another who tries to reach their goals without the added support that good supplements can bring.

You don’t need to go overboard as it is easy to spend a lot of money on supplements. Simply taking a good multi vitamin and mineral supplement daily will be sufficient to start with.

Water For Weight Loss

One of the most important parts of your weight loss program will be to ensure that you get a regular supply of water throughout the day as it will not only assist with your digestion and elimination but it will also ensure that you remain hydrated throughout the day helping your body to function as it should.

Foods that are high in carbohydrates give us energy but there are different types of carbohydrates and eating the wrong ones can make you fat.

The bad carbohydrates are simple carbohydrates such as sugar. These will give you a boost of energy as the sugar gets into the bloodstream fast but they are not as good for you as complex carbohydrates such as grains, fruits and vegetables which will help to satisfy your appetite and make you feel full for longer by supplying you with fiber.

The problem with most people, and the reason they get fat, is because they are eating simple carbohydrates and fats in big quantities in their diet of junk food.

Simply changing from these poor carbohydrate foods to more complex carbohydrates will help to lose weight.

Proteins are made up of amino acids which are the building blocks of the body and they help to maintain and repair the components of the body.

Proteins also supply energy but not as readily as carbohydrates and this is why many people who are tired choose to eat more carbohydrates to give them energy.

Fats will also supply immediate energy, however they are very high in calorie content and there are many health risks associated with a diet that is high in fat.

All foods consist of one or more of these three main types of food; carbohydrate, protein and fat.

Where possible your carbohydrates should be complex carbohydrates or starches and try to reduce the simple carbohydrates such as sugar from your diet.

You should have no more than 30% of your caloric intake on a daily basis coming from fats.

Get a sufficient amount of dietary fiber to help curb your appetite and help with your digestive system.

Taking good quality vitamins and minerals will also help with your weight loss and maintain a healthy body throughout your weight loss program.

Difficult Dieting

The problem with anything that is too difficult in our busy lifestyles is the fact that eventually we will stop doing what we perceive to be too hard and look for alternatives that are easier.

It’s not that we are inclined to give up when the going gets tough; It is because there are generally easier alternatives these days due to the advances that have been made over the years and in particular with weight loss there have been many advances in both nutrition and fitness training.

Unfortunately most diets are just too difficult for people to maintain for any length of time and that is why the failure rate is so high.

Where there are two alternatives for you to lose weight (provided of course they are genuine weight loss opportunities) then you should generally look towards the easier option as this will be the one that you will be able to continue using long enough to get your desired results.

You should not feel as though you are on a diet because that in itself often means you are working hard to achieve something.

Just the word diet in itself instantly strikes fear into the minds of many people because so many times in the past they have tried various different diets and not had any long term success.

You should think more in terms of making small adjustments to your lifestyle as this is a better alternative than to think you are on a ‘diet‘.

For many people ‘dieting‘ is rejected in their minds eye as being something unpleasant that is hard to endure. Improving your nutrition and fitness is not nearly as difficult to maintain as ‘dieting

Focus on lifestyle changes rather than a reduction in food and you won’t feel like you are having to give something up that you probably enjoy.

Walking For Exercise

Almost anyone anywhere can benefit from walking for exercise. You may see in the news that people are getting bigger and bigger, and some of these people are so obese that they cannot exercise in the traditional way. No matter what the reason for this problem, there is always a way out. Though some people like to go with surgery to lose weight, there are many others who do not want to take the risks associated with gastric bypass. They may feel hopeless, but there is help much closer than they could have imagined.

Walking for exercise is so simple anyone can do it. Even if you have problems walking from your house to your mailbox, you can still lose weight. You simply start out by walking to your mailbox and back. The next day, you go a few steps more. As the days go by, you add a little more to your walk. Soon you’ll find that walking for exercise was something that you should have been doing a long time ago. You don’t need to buy expensive equipment to do it, and you can do it any time you can find the free time.

I strongly recommend walking for exercise for everyone. If you have children, you should start them walking when they’re young. I know that my kids and I used to go on our daily walks. Though we couldn’t go for walks as much in the winter months, we went when we could. I didn’t tell them that we were walking for exercise. We simply took walks to spend time together, walk to the school playground and have some extra fun while we were there.
